I've just been to see Vampire Weekend live at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre.
Opening act Cloud Control came on to a roar from the crowd (which died down slightly when people figured out it WASN'T Vampire Weekend). For the next half an hour the indie rockers worked their way through a catchy set of songs that went down well with the Adelaide crowd. Cloud Control looked and sounded comfortable in front of the particularly large crowd and showed a stage presence that you wouldn't expect from a band coming out of the Blue Mountains.
After what seemed like a particularly long wait, Vampire Weekend took to the stage revealing a fairly elaborate setup, including a backdrop (the cover from new album Contra, complete with light-up eyes) and a large array of lights (including 5 crystal chandeliers hanging from the roof). The band played for an hour and a half and covered the majority of the songs from both their albums. Singles / Fan favourites such as A Punk, Cousins and Giving up The Gun went over well with the audience singing and clapping along. The set also included some softer numbers such as Horchata and Diplomat's Son, As well as a fantastic autotuned performance of California English. Vampire Weekend showed that it doesn't matter where they are, Or how many people actually understand their lyrics, They'll always be willing to put on a good show, After all, A Vampire Weekend is a good weekend.
